A long time ago there was a giant named Goliath. He was a fierce warrior sent to wipe out an army. People were afraid of him because he was so big, and all their attempts to face him down had failed. In the end it took the courage of a small boy, who was afraid, but had the courage and strength to stand up to this seemingly impossible foe. Goliath fell and the boy was hailed as a hero.
We may not be facing literal giants in our lives, but I don’t doubt that there are things that appear to be so big, so terrifying, and so vast, that we feel there is no way around them. That thing, whatever it is, is Goliath. It’s a big force that’s standing in our way and it’s telling us that the things we want to do, we can’t, and the only option we have is to accept what we’re given without complaint.
It’s not always easy to face up to your Goliath. Sometimes, in facing it, you may come up against opposition that challenges the way you look at yourself and those around you. It may even bring into question your morals and ideals. Is facing down this giant in your life really worth it?
We can be aware of our giant, but feel unable to do anything about it at the moment, and that’s okay. Face your giant, study it, come up with a plan of attack, and then knock it down.
