Tip for Tap in Playing Fair

Fair Play

One of the easiest things to do is to treat others the same way that they treat us. Where I’m from we call that action ‘Tip for Tap’ – if you’re nice to me, I’ll be nice to you. If you treat me badly, I’ll treat you the same – if not worse. Perhaps we will even call it displaying mutual respect. After all, why should you be nice to a person who doesn’t afford you the same courtesy?

Tip for tap. Eye for an eye. Tooth for a tooth. What do we really gain when we act this way, but a sense of momentary satisfaction. Temporary bliss that is here today and gone tomorrow. Actions of fair play.

When we treat people this way, is it really fair? It doesn’t matter if the person hurt you, or treated you badly, if you return the actions in kind then the cycle will continue. What about returning someones evil for kindness?  In showing them that you can be civil in the face of their aggression, you may teach them a better way.   It’s not easy to be nice to those we’d rather scorn, but it makes you the better person.

Maybe that’s really what fair play is all about.
