Why I relay . . .

Growing up, and into the early part of my adult life, I learned about cancer.  It was a “disease without a cure” that needed to be caught in the early stages for a person to have a chance at survival. It was something that held no bias on who it attacked and there were support groups and fundraisers to help raise awareness and help find a cure.  I would be saddened by the people going through, but it never truly affected me.

Until my grandmother was diagnosed and died in 2006. That’s when cancer became more real to me. It became a more real part of my life when, shortly after that, my mother was diagnosed with four different cancers.  All of them at Stage 4 and the doctor told us there was nothing to be done, but try the treatments and see.

Suddenly I was faced with the realization that this vibrant woman – who was so so full of life and into everything – was going to die.

For two years I watched this happen. I saw the good days, and the bad days. I saw her fight and win small victories, and I saw her loose. One of the most saddening things to me was seeing how people would treat her once they knew she had cancer.

Suddenly she wasn’t a person anymore, she was Cancer. People saw the disease instead of the person, but she was still a person. She still wanted to experience life as much as she could. She still wanted to be a part of things. My mother wasn’t Cancer, she was a person who happened to have cancer.

People who are diagnosed with cancer, or any condition, still want to be treated like people and experience life. They are not their circumstances.

Relay for Life is one of the largest fundraisers for the American Cancer Society to help raise funds and cancer awareness.  There are events all across the US that raise millions of dollars each year. The Fantasy Faire in Second Life is one of the largest virtual events, bringing people together to raise thousands of dollars for the cause. It is your chance to help bring about an end to cancer by supporting the event. Don’t have any money? It cost nothing to volunteer and spread the word.

It’s too late for my mom and my grandmother. My other grandmother is in her second year of battling cancer. This is why I relay. Maybe cancer is real in your life, maybe your heart goes out to those who are going, or have gone, through it.  Maybe you’re a survivor. Whatever the case may be, if we all come together and help, just a little bit, we can start to see an end to cancer.

-& | The Metal Men . . .

The food rations were about to run out. With the limited food, the people in the camp were growing hungrier. Everything had been burned or destroyed when the Metal Men appeared almost a year ago. They brought with them death, destruction, and the end modern civilization.

Scouts went out in teams.  Each time they brought back what supplies they could. Soon not only did the supplies start to dwindle, but the people started disappearing too. The ones who made it back told stories of the Metal Men attacking and taking away those who didn’t escape.  No one knew what had happened to them, as they were never seen again. Some people believed that they were used to create more Metal Men.

Last week a scout made it back to the camp – haggard and badly injured. He brought news a warehouse 20 miles to the West that may contain food. The only problem was that the area was guarded by Metal Men. He said that they looked old and rusty, maybe they were even nonfunctioning. It was decided that in a few days the scout would take a group with him and they would make their way to the warehouse.

However, one particular young lady, who had been listening, decided to go out and see it for herself.

Holiday Ramblings . . .

The holidays are here.  In the United States we just finished with Thanksgiving and now it’s full speed on to the next big thing: Christmas.

In all this time of running about, gatherings and a myriad of social events, do you ever stop and wonder what it’s all for?  What does it all mean?  What is it that you are thankful for this holiday season? Or are you simply acting thankful because that’s what you’re suppose to be doing.

With Christmas fast approaching, many use material possessions to express emotions. The price tag, being reflective of their feelings towards the other person, causes people to break open their piggy banks and spend money that they don’t have. All this in an effort to prove how much they care.

But, if you ask me, the best gift has no price tag.  It can’t be brought in a store, exchanged, or lost. The greatest gift is love.  It’s time.  If you’re wondering what you can give people this holiday season, why not give them a little love.

On a mission . . .

Out of all the other Druids in her village who sought after the honor of seeking the mysterious Shan’zi relic, Kibou was chosen. Whether it was due to her tenacity or stubborn aggression, when her name was chosen many were left with more than a bit of doubt. She wasn’t known to be the best at anything, but had now been given this impossible quest.

The relic was known to be hidden in the ruins of the old monastery, on an isle across the South Sea. Legend spoke of dangers that confronted any who sought the relic. Only one person had ever returned, but their mind was gone.

Her travels were laid out for her, but even without it Kibou would have known the way. With every day that passed, she felt a pull at her spirit and knew it was the relic calling out to her. This feeling worked as its own directional compass and it grew stronger the closer she got to the destination.

After many days she finally saw the ruins in the distance. The pull was so strong that her body wanted to move on it’s own, but she took a deep breath and closed her eyes.  Maybe this is what happened to all who had come before her?  They fell victim to the pull. Kibou focused her mind and her long elven ears twitched as she listened to the nature all around her.  Allowing herself to open to the environment. The air around began to stir and in her minds eye she traveled the rest of the way to the ruins. Buried deep in the heart of it, next to a bed of orchids, was the Shan’zi. Said to be a gift from the gods, the Shan’zi was able to influence fate.

She saw now apparent dangers, but the air felt placid.  Kibou opened her eyes and knelt down besides a collection of rocks and studied the ruins. She felt hesitant, but the pull was still there, begging and pleading for her to come.

I will bring the Shan’zi to my village, Kibou resolved to herself. She was going to do it. She was going to influence her own fate.
